Adaptive Yoga was pioneered by Matthew Sanford, who is simply inspirational. Following a terrible accident when he was just thirteen he was left paralysed. He began practising yoga some years later and now teaches both able bodied and disabled students. His life is dedicated to developing mind-body connection. He also trains teachers to pass on this work.
I have been teaching Adaptive Yoga since the summer of 2019 and loving every class. When the pandemic hit and we went into lockdown, one of my wonderful students, Miranda McCarthy, decided that we should take our class online, it became a highlight of the week, to be able to meet, practise yoga and talk together. Miranda, who is another force of power and inspiration, then set up Adaptive Yoga Live (www.adaptiveyogalive.com) and started streaming adaptive classes three times a week, bringing the benefits of this wonderful practice to people everywhere who are living with disability, thereby connecting a population that are often isolated and were even more so during lockdowns.
“Karen's classes have been a complete game-changer for me, not only in terms of improving my Arthritis symptoms, (improving my strength, flexibility, and overall conditioning) but feeling supported by everyone in the class. Karen is able to adapt poses specifically for my range of motion, which means even though I am participating in a group, I feel like each class is tailored just for me! Karen's background in dance means her sessions are creative, inspired, and skillfully taught. I have never felt better and I am truly grateful for Karen's passion and dedication to her Disabled yogis!”
